The reference to “4:8” in the name of our advisory firm refers to a bible verse from Philippians 4:8: Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things. (NIV 4:8)
I came across this message in our Men’s Friday morning fellowship class in early 2015. Later that year, I was very fortunate to hear Tommy Newberry speak on this verse and the book he wrote: The 4:8 Principle, 40 Days to a Joy-Filled Life. This verse and Tommy’s book changed my whole outlook on life. By following this verse in my daily life, it became clear to me how fulfilling my relationships are as a parent, husband, friend, advisor, and servant.
I decided to incorporate this verse not only in my life, but also in the lives of our clients. The world today is riddled with the media’s focus on one tragedy after the next. Endless wars, poverty, terrorist attacks, abuse, social injustice, unemployment, and economic instability overwhelm our news feeds with negativity by the second.
In this time where our first instinct might be to focus on damage and despair, we must raise our standards and challenge the status quo. We must seek a higher standard in all aspects of our lives, including our attitude towards health, wealth, family and faith.
Investing and financial life planning is not immune to negative thinking. We believe the “Wall Street” way of investing is stressful, fueled by and filled with fear, greed and anxiety. Purpose-driven investing –The 4:8 Way — strives to offer a different alternative.
